The formulation of the SDG global agenda has been an immense opportunity for all spheres of government and stakeholders to express and commit to (sustainable) development from many different angles. Many local governments have changed their planning and policy making systems, and reported, provided examples or designed sustainable strategies that are globally visible. Framing the SDGs as a shared vision has encouraged local governments to embrace them, fostering partnerships and public buy-in. The “localization” and the references to local and regional government activities and opportunities have penetrated the global narrative.

However, with 5 years left until 2030 the achievement, it has been confirmed that many of the targets will not be achieved, and many SDG are far behind track. In the crossroad of acceleration, exemplification and closing critical gaps to deliver ìs essential to leave no territory behind. The municipal movement needs to do its own evaluation, to look back and forward, what has been achieved, what lessons learnt and how to prepare for the upcoming commitments and agendas.
