Local governance is at a crossroads globally. In an increasingly interconnected world, the role of local and regional governments is evolving, driven by complex challenges such as climate change, public health crises, and the erosion of public trust in institutions. Now, more than ever, local and regional governments must take a decisive step forward to enhance their capacity, assert their role in the multilevel governance framework and actively shape the future of their communities.

The Summit of the Future saw our constituency call on a new era of diplomacy that fosters peace, cooperation, and solidarity between communities, reinforcing city and territorial diplomacy, democratic participation, human rights, and renewed democracies.

This panel debate will explore how local and regional governments can lead in this transformation, drawing on insights from elected officials across different regions and a leading public administration scholar. The discussion will focus on the common trends, challenges, and opportunities in renewing local democracy and enhancing the effectiveness of local governance in a multilevel context.
