Thinking Big Meeting - The Global Commons
It is time to review the implementation of the agenda and go further with policy implications and shape them with you all. Expectation: Deepen the narratives, consolidate and broader the partnerships, strengthen public policies and the role of public community partnerships to cities and territories
Key topics of this discussion: local commons that have international repercussions. Including the role of local and regional governments, but also the role of communities in producing, managing and taking care of the commons. Protect, scale up, green municipalization of this common. Not just what but the how. Who else should be in the discussion? The idea of thinking big is to be radical, in terms of taking this as a political duty. The challenges are global and shared locally around the world. Seeing the need to go further in the practices we have been trying to put in common for decades
The process is also important as the recommendation because it creates partnerships. Inequality and the impacts of climate change. Both of this required comprehensive changes in consumption and on how we measure human progress. Fundamentally it requires shifts in power. Less on the commons, my proposal is on calling the governments. Organizations such as UCLG must be clear that the space where the commons can be promoted must be protected, otherwise it would be promoting a project that does not go to the heart of the matter, which is systemic change
Common social discourse: the truth. We are confronted to attempts to create alternative narrative about these global topics given by misinformation. The parallel values undermine the narrative of the commons; The emergency of dark hidden money design to weaken the democratic values and processes; Attacks on institutions created for the common good. Public services, health care systems, education and equality of institutions.
We are focus on SDG 16: working in peace security issues in Africa. Strengthening institutions to promote peace, there has to be trust in governments. The relation between people and decision makers is important but also the quality of equity and tolerance. The significant role for cities where violence is coming to the street. To see peace as a common good. Feminist perspective and the issues of gender equality are a key pathway when we think big on our global and local commons
Air, water and peace (fundamental to food security). Genetic material of plants and animals: the world is losing bio-diversity at a major scale. All of these is related to inequality and climate change. Knowledge: important part in global commons.
Consider young people. The issues of children do not find the kind of consideration it matters. Consider also participation and regional variation, how can this process make sure that the marginalized and unsupported and encourage? The capacity of cities. How can we make sure that the capacity of decentralization is taking into care in the process? Regional and intercity dimension. Thinking about the past and the future, temporal dimension into our discussion
Recognize inequality and migration. In 2020, we consulted organizations in 79 countries and came to the conclusion that there were transactional patterns of concern such as global health and the future of work for young people. Young people are worn out by being left behind. Lack of access to financial support or even barriers to access into the formal labor market. Accessto education: significant to children and youth. Mismanagement of access to basic goods, we would like to be radical in these issues. The approach to education is fundamental
Disability rights advocate. Technology and digitalization of cities. Use these tools to address climate change, not only green but also inclusive. My point is to create a culture of accessibility through collective governance that identifies and eliminates physical, social and institutional barriers. Collective action to eliminate barriers and collective actions to end human suffering and agency deprivations. Urban design, participation at the local level. Critical tools addressing inequality
Rethink the role of local and regional governments in the provision and access of services and goods in the cities. Is about moving beyond the agenda of being a provider, it is not enough. Calling the governments to be a guarantee, a safe guardian of people rights. Collective strategies and actions in the cities.
Produce a document with recommendations that will inform the politicians and establish a dialogue
We would be happy for you to table specific issues. We want you to be able to influence in the way we are advising local and regional governments.Town halls will be meeting at the end of February; we would like to invite the town halls to have a plenary were ideas would be exchange. Let us know about any issue that you want to be heard. What kind of inputs will you be expecting from this group for the meeting of all Town Halls at the UCLG retreat in February? We need to identify 3,4 critical areas that we want to cover collaboratively and bring this into the discussion with the other townhalls and see how it relates to governance and trust, climate, care and the rest of the townhalls What we are looking for is a structure of the issues that you think need to be addressed in this deepening.By the third week of February, we would need to have a concept note with fundamental ideas on how we want to move forward with the process
